Admission to the Veterinary Nursing Program
In order to pursue a major in Veterinary Nursing, students must meet the Intended Veterinary Nursing admissions requirements and be officially accepted to Wilson College.
To officially declare and enter the Veterinary Nursing Program, students must meet the following requirements:
- Earned at least 12 semester hours of credit.
- Have a minimum Wilson College cumulative GPA of 2.500 or higher.
- Complete VMT-115 with a grade of B- (2.7) or higher.
- Complete BIO-101 or BIO-110 with a grade of C (2.0) or higher.
- If students complete MAT-097 and/or MAT-103, they must earn a grade of C (2.0) or higher.
Once all of the above listed requirements are met, the students may declare their Veterinary Nursing major and specific concentration area (Veterinary Biology, Veterinary Business Management, or Veterinary Equi-Assist).
To take any VMT course above VMT-115, students must meet the requirements noted above for declaration of the Veterinary Nursing major. Only students who are Veterinary Nursing Intended majors may enroll in VMT-115.
Internal Transfer (Change of Major) into the Veterinary Nursing Major
This policy applies to all currently enrolled Wilson College students who request a change of major into the Veterinary Nursing program after initial admission to the College.
Policy
To be eligible for an internal transfer into the Veterinary Nursing major, a student must meet all of the following requirements:
- Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher at the time of application.
- Successfully complete BIO 101 or BIO 110 with a final grade of C or better.
- Successfully complete MAT 103 or higher with a final grade of C or better.
- If completed, earn a final grade of C or better in CHM 101 or CHM 103 (chemistry is not required to apply).
- Submit all required Veterinary Nursing admission materials, including:
If a student has not taken BIO 101 or BIO 110 and MAT 103 as noted above, a student must meet the following requirements:
- Earn a cumulative Wilson College grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher at the time of application.
- Meet with the Unit Director of Veterinary Nursing to review program structure, progression requirements, and professional expectations.
- Meet initial VN admission criteria to the college:
- High school biology or related science and algebra 2 with a grade of C or better
- Supplemental materials that confirm a student’s interest in and understanding of a career in Veterinary Nursing as required by AVMA guidelines.
- 20 Hours of shadowing at a veterinary clinic and completion of shadowing form
- Technical ability standards acknowledged
- Essay
Decision and Capacity
Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements guarantees consideration but does not guarantee placement. Approval of an internal transfer is contingent upon program capacity and available instructional and clinical resources.
Students who meet the requirements are approved as Veterinary Nursing Intended majors and are eligible to enroll in VMT-115. To officially declare the major and concentration, students must meet the admissions requirements to Veterinary Nursing Program.
Veterinary Nursing Program General Requirements
Veterinary Nursing Student general requirements:
- Students must obtain at least a grade of C (2.0 on a 4.0-point scale) in each Veterinary Nursing (VMT) course above VMT-115 and any 100 level biology, chemistry and math course listed as pre-requisites to enroll in a VMT course. These courses include BIO-101, BIO-110, CHM-101, CHM-103, and MAT-103.
- Students may only repeat Veterinary Nursing (VMT) courses one time (i.e., a course may be taken for credit a maximum of two times).
- Two grades less than a C (2.0) in any VMT course will result in withdrawal from the Veterinary Nursing major.
- Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 in order to progress in Veterinary Nursing (VMT) and to graduate. Progress at meeting the cumulative 2.5 GPA is verified at the end of each spring semester. GPAs from the Registrar’s Office are NOT rounded.
- Animal care may be required of all students in any VMT (Veterinary Nursing) course.
- Due to AVMA regulations, all veterinary nursing students must provide proof of rabies vaccination by February 1st of the calendar year in which they plan to enroll in VMT221: Clinical Practices II, VMT-355: Internship, and VMT-415: Veterinary Surgical Nursing. Failure to obtain the full rabies vaccination series will disqualify students from completing the required AVMA essential skills through the Wilson College Veterinary Nursing program for graduation. It will be the student’s responsibility to identify alternate methods of skills acquisition (pre-approved by the division.
