NUR 102 Foundational Concepts - Nursing Practice

This course provides an introduction to nursingand roles of the nurse in micro- and macrosystems,as well as profession-related and patient careconcepts. Emphasis is placed on the knowledge andskills needed to provide safe, quality care. The theoretical foundation for basic assessmentand nursing skills is presented, and the studentis given an opportunity to demonstrate theseskills in a clinical laboratory setting. Anintroduction to the nursing process provides adecision-making framework to assist students indeveloping effective clinical judgment skills.This course also provides an introduction to the principles of pharmacology, including:pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, medicationinteractions and potential adverse medicationreactions. Emphasis is placed on drugclassifications and nursing care related tothe safe administration of medication to patientsacross the life span. Course prerequisite: NUR102; co-requisite: HSC 216. (5 sem. hrs. - 3 hours of didactic (lecture) and 8 hours of clinical per week)
