Healthcare and Medical Humanities, Bachelor of Arts

The undergraduate interdisciplinary program in Healthcare and Medical Humanities (HCMH) engages in the humanistic study of social, ethical, and spiritual questions of health, illness, and caregiving. Students take classes in an array of departments, including literature, philosophy, psychology, and fine arts.Students learn to think critically and communicate effectively about social and other factors affecting healthcare. Students completing the major in Healthcare and Medical Humanities, aided by coursework in the physical sciences, will find themselves uniquely situated to apply for positions in public health, health education, healthcare administration, and clinical research. Given the program’s holistic approach to healthcare, students majoring in nursing, sociology and psychology may find Healthcare and Medical Humanities a fitting second major or minor. HCMH majors may also wish to pursue graduate studies in medicine, social work, physical therapy, or mental health.
